Programmes on Conservation Biology
Although many institutes in the Government and Non-government sectors are involved in the conservation and protection of eco-cultural resources in Sri Lanka, they have received minimal formal training in the diverse aspects of Conservation Biology. The private and Non-governmental sector in Sri Lanka is particularly disadvantaged as such opportunities are presently limited. Such training requires considerable funding that is beyond the capacity of the large number of local NGOs actively involved in the nature conservation movement.
CES launched a training course on conservation biology aiming to provide theoretical and field methods in Conservation Biology and presently negotiating with national and international groups to establish an Environmental Education Network and capacity-building among local concern groups in Conservation Biology.
Concept papers for the establishment of a Marine Protected Area Network and an Upper Montane Cloud Forest Network in Sri Lanka has been submitted to the Biodiversity Secretariat of the Ministry of Forestry & Environment of Sri Lanka and negotiations are presently underway with concern groups for long-term habitat conservation measures and case studies.
Project proposals relating to the Establishment of a Marine Environmental Education and Information Centre and Coastal Pollution Prevention and Marine Environmental Education Project investment plan has been prepared and possible sources of funding are being explored at present. The proposed Centre will facilitate networking for Coastal and Marine related activities in Sri Lanka and the region
